I am about to buy an eight-week old gundog puppy and have been wondering whether I should take out insurance in case of accidents, vet bills etc.

The cost, though, seems fairly high. Should I forget it?

GUNDOG INSURANCE

Insurance is a great idea but a lot depends on whether your dog is kept as a pet or a working dog.

In my experience some insurance companies will not insure working dogs but there are those that will so be prepared to shop around.

You probably won’t need me to tell you that insuring a working dog can prove expensive – which is why a lot of people take the route of putting money aside each month for use when it’s needed.

That said, a course of veterinary treatment can cost heavily so you need to bear that in mind in coming to a decision.

Obviously if the dog is primarily a pet then it will be cheaper to insure and definitely worth doing.
