The Wiltshire Working Gun Dog Society held an a.v. retriever novice field trial at Orchardleigh, Frome, by kind permission of Charles Fuller Esq.

Judged by Terry Bailey and Stuart Robson on the right, and Gaynor Bailey and Ken Chandler on the left, the party of guns were spread out around a cover which produced a plethora of pheasants with some good shooting taking place to test the 10 labradors and four golden retrievers to the limit.

Danny Burgess' golden retriever, Captain Crusader of Catcombe, set the pace with some excellent fast retrieving.

Isobel Whitfield's lab Abney Acer was sent second dog for a running cock pheasant in a thick hedge, which was not picked, but returned with a dead cock from further along, which was accepted by the judge as Isobel couldn't see her dog.

Ron Jeffery's lab, Tweedshot Rio of Gablescroft, picked a bird after the previous dog had failed and Thelma Salaman's lab, Cordomsal Buzz, and Tony Atfield's lab, Jamaican Dream, were working well to retrieve birds from a wood.

Six dogs were called for the run off, where the judges sent them for pheasants in a wood or across parkland. Unfortunately slight handler errors dropped some really promising dogs down the field but the winners worked really well.
