Midland Retrievers at Bretby

The Midland Area of the United Retriever Club held an open cold game test on the Bretby Estate near Burton on Trent by kind permission of Mr R. Perkins.

Stewards Steve Newitt and Roy Stone ran the nearest thing one could get to a field trial on the most wonderful ground.

During the first part of the day judges Steve Crookes and Mick Newsam were able to see the dogs work on some undulating ground on a hillside, over a fence into the woods and then, as the line moved forward, across more undulating ground amongst the trees with the odd pheasant taking flight to lend a realistic touch to the day.

After the first two rounds there was a drive and the dogs were sent across the lake for a blind retrieve. This was the undoing for some dogs but the best ones made it look easy.

After a short break for lunch 11 dogs were taken for a final retrieve and the judges closed their books.

Headkeeper Glynn Roland had provided an endless supply of cold game of all varieties and the club could not have been made more welcome.
