How can I stop my gundogs fouling their kennel?

By Mark Whitehouse

Tuesday, 26 May 2009

My gundogs live outside in a purpose-built run and timber built housing. They presistantly mess inside their sleeping area. Any advice on stopping them doing it?

MARK WHITEHOUSE SAYS: This is an unpleasant problem for any gun dog owner and kenneling two gun dogs together will always have its problems.

As young gun dogs they can get so wrapped up playing I suspect that they forget to relieve themselves until it is just too late.

The way forward with this problem is to split feed times and exercise straight after both feed times.

They must be taught through positive training methods to control themselves and only use specific areas to exercise their bodily functions.

This is the same method that would be used when toilet training a dog that lives indoors.

You have to be vigilant and consistent for a totally successful cure.
