Why is it gundogs never seem to bother with a collar?

GUNDOG TRAINING

Yes, this is true, shooters – myself included – would never dream of working a dog with a collar on because of the high likelihood it would get caught up, with potentially fatal consequences.

This happened to me some years ago with a spaniel wearing a flea collar, which I had forgotten to remove.

Everything was fine until the dog went for a retrieve over a flooded river and got caught up on some submerged bankside fencing.

It took me and two others (complete with thorough soaking) to get the dog free.

Legal expert, David Frost answered a similar question in the magazine recently and his reply was that working dogs are exempt from wearing a collar while actually working but if they are simply being exercised or walked in public places then they need to be fitted with one.
