Beater Barry raises yet more money for charity

Completing his fourth season of beating for charity and getting ever closer to his target, Barry Atkinson's fund-raising and determination is as strong as ever
Having flushed pheasants on 398 shoots, super-beater Barry Atkinson has come to the end of another successful fund-raising season. Barry has tirelessly joined the beating lines around the country in his bid to raise £1,000,000 for Cancer Research UK and the National Gamekeepers' Organisation (NGO) Charitable Trust.
Barry finished the 2005/2006 season having joined the beating line on 286 shoots, and by completing this season, with nearly 400 shoots logged, Barry is nearing his target of 1,000 shoots in 100 counties.
ST has been following Barry's progress and this season, from shoots alone, he has raised an astonishing £26,967. Last year, Barry split the £102,400 that he had raised over the first three years of his fund-raising between his chosen charities. He told ST: "It's been a tiring but successful season. At the beginning, I was worried that I had taken on the impossible. I was extremely intimidated, but I think it's necessary to be exceptionally ambitious in order to get mass support from people. At the start of this season we were worried about bird flu, fatigue, illness and travel arrangements, but the man upstairs kept smiling down on us and we kept our fingers crossed all the way."
"I'm going to have a rest now but will begin planning what will hopefully be another fantastic season for 2007/2008, raising money to help fieldsports enthusiasts' countryside and health."
