The Golden Eagle Trust (GET), managing the Irish Golden Eagle reintroduction programme in Glenveagh National Park, County Donegal, has refuted Scottish Gamekeepers’ Association (SGA) claims that golden eagles in Ireland are being routinely persecuted (ST News, 21 August).
The trust dismissed claims that exports of eagles are impacting on Scotland’s population, claiming Scottish persecution is itself to blame: “The SGA has called for the collection of young Scottish eagles to be halted. Ironically, it is quite probable that there would have been no need for an Irish release programme if the annual persecution of the Scottish golden eagle population had ceased over the past 20 years. However, the current artificial mortality has limited natural expansion of the Scottish population into former golden eagle ranges in northern England, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.”
