Anglers will be united rather than cast adrift.

Britain's 1.8 million regular anglers have united under one organisation, the Angling Trust. The new organisation hopes to recruit 20,000 members in its first year and be up to 100,000 by 2011, says chief executive Mark Lloyd, formerly of the Anglers' Conservation Association.

He says the new organisation will stand up for anglers "wherever their interests are being threatened". Initial battlegrounds are fishing at sea, sand and gravel extraction, predators and poachers and access to water being cut off for health and safety reasons. The formation of the new organisation will enable a marketing and communications department to be set up to help promote angling's social, conservation and economic benefits. Members will get cash back on their freshwater rod licences, tackle and permits.
