Police recently discovered an injured red deer on Sir Tim Rices Dundonnell estate, in Wester Ross, after it had been shot at by poachers with a high-powered crossbow.
Alasdair Macdonald, the gamekeeper who tracked down the deer and despatched it, said: The hind had a calf with it, but we couldnt get it, so the calf will probably die too.
You cant kill a beast quickly and cleanly with a crossbow. The poachers would probably use lurchers to follow the injured beast and then shoot it with another bolt.
