Police recently discovered an injured red deer on Sir Tim Rice’s Dundonnell estate, in Wester Ross, after it had been shot at by poachers with a high-powered crossbow.

Alasdair Macdonald, the gamekeeper who tracked down the deer and despatched it, said: “The hind had a calf with it, but we couldn’t get it, so the calf will probably die too.”

“You can’t kill a beast quickly and cleanly with a crossbow. The poachers would probably use lurchers to follow the injured beast and then shoot it with another bolt.”
