Lib Dems challenge Olympic decision and 'legacy for shooting'

Lib Dems: "The site of Woolwich will merely be a temporary structure. It will leave no legacy for the sport."

Liberal Democrat London Assembly Olympics Spokesperson, Dee Doocey, has supported the decision by the Sportsman's Association to urge volunteers to boycott London's 2012 Olympics.

Dee Doocey said: "This is a serious development in a sorry saga. I hope the Olympic Board listen and learn. They must reconsider their decision to choose Woolwich as the temporary venue for shooting.”

"Everyone involved in shooting sports in the UK wants shooting to be at Bisley, as it will provide a lasting legacy for future generations. Bisley has proved time and time again that it can host major events including the shooting for the Commonweath Games in 2002.”

"The site of Woolwich will merely be a temporary structure. It will leave no legacy for the sport and will simply be a huge waste of money. This is not what Londoners signed up to."

To pursue a policy of spending Â£40,000000 on Woolwich as a temporary venue for the Olympic shooting events is guaranteed to leave the government's intended legacy for the shooting sports. That is the legacy of missed opportunity.

Supporting Bisley as a venue offers the government and the Games organizers the opportunity to "kettle" shooting events into a remote place where no one will notice that shooting exists. A complete nonsense and an anti-shooting solution! What did we get from the 2002 Commonwealth Games? Apart from depriving Manchester of of a permanent range - absolutely nothing!

Dee Doocey has not got the fact straight on Olympic shooting. Woolwich site is clearly a non-starter, but so is Bisley. What is needed is a permanent range in or near the main Olympic site, or at the very least in London. To be of any use after the games it must be within easy reach by public transport where the youngsters can get to without parental involvement either as the drivers of financially. Bisley may be 30min ride from London, but that translates into Â£12 - Â£15 in fares or fuel and is, therefore, beyond reach for the vast majority of young people. The sport cannot be developed further if all the important events are "kettled" in a relatively remote place in Surrey. The supporters of Bisley as a venue for Olympic shooting are clearly anti-shooting and should be unmasked as such.

I am General Secretary of the Sportsman's Assn. Of course Bisley should be the venue. It was perfect for the Commonwealth Games in 2002. It would save millions and be the perfect legacy for our children and grand children. Politicians should not meddle with our sport Mike Wells

As was demonstrated by an unguarded comment by Tessa Jowell she promised that Woolwich area would benefit if her chosen person as a candidate for a local constituency was voted as the constituency candidate. Was this not called gerrymandering when there were still some honourable politicians about. What actually needs to be done is to alert the local populace that a number of people are going to have to be moved from their houses/flats to accomodate this farce. Are the local populace aware of the noise factor of shooting in an urban area - we know that shooting echos beautifully off buildings. Again ther local people need to be aware of this. Withdrawing labour from judging, umpiring etc is rather petty and childish and may bring our sport into disrepute but a groundswell of opposition from the local people is totally detached from our sport. This is where we should be aiming surely because this would demonstrate the sheer impracticality of the idea of Woolwich as a venue. Can we not leaflet drop all homes in the area and use the local politicians to be the persuaders of the stupidity of the scheme. Grassroots opposition could work.

ALL THIS DECISION DOES IS CONFIRM THAT THE OLYMPIC COMMITTE ARE JUST PUPPETS, DOING WHAT THEY ARE TOLD BY A BUNCH OF LIARS AND THIEVES MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS POLITICIANS. WOULD ANYONE VOTE FOR THESE SCOUNDREL'S KNOW

The powers that be would rather waste millions of pounds raised from members of the public than admit that it will in any way give long term support to the sport of shooting. Who are the irational ones, them, or us shooters, I think they are, all frightened of be thought of as a person who may be associated with a gun, or shooting. Why are more polititians not condemming this blatent waste of public money. Perhaps they are too busy trying to sort out their expenses claims.
