A campaign to cull grey squirrels, crows and mink is due to start in the Loch Lomond area to protect the capercaillie population

A campaign by local landowners in conjunction with RSPB Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage to cull grey squirrels, crows and mink is due to start in the Loch Lomond area to protect the most south-westerly population of capercaillie in Scotland.

The most recent census of the population in the area has shown that the birds have declined from an estimated 32 individuals 10 years ago to around five in 2009. Habitat degradation, human disturbance and nest predation are all cited as
reasons for the decline.
