Durham police are facing further questions after admitting that officers were called to Peterlee gunman Michael Atherton’s home four times between 2002 and 2004 to handle incidents of domestic violence.

Police have also confirmed that six firearms, comprising the weapons Atherton was legally entitled to hold on two licences, have been recovered from the house where he shot and killed three women on New Year’s Day.

Three air rifles and an air pistol were also found.
