Over 1,000 shooters have already taken part in a new campaign to fend off a threatened Europe-wide ban on the use of lead shot.
EU threat to ban all lead shot.
An investigation by the European Chemical Agency into the issue of lead in ammunition has led the Countryside Alliance (CA) to believe that the threat from Europe of a complete ban is now greater than the one faced domestically.
The CA’s executive chairman Sir Barney White-Spunner (below) said that by lobbying their MEP, shooters could secure lead “for generations to come”.
He said: “If someone finds and proves incontrovertibly that lead causes serious damage to health or wildlife then we are willing to talk.”
“Until that point the status quo must remain. Our shooting is too important to the environment and the rural economy to be decided by Brussels.”
The CA also pointed out that the UK’s gameshooting tradition would be disproportionately affected by any further restrictions on the use of lead shot.
