Q: Can I feed raw tripe to my Labrador on a daily basis, or should I mix it with something else? Is tripe as good as it’s cracked up to be, or is overrated?
A: I would say a big ‘yes’ to feeding tripe to your dog on a daily basis and another yes to mixing it with a good dry dog food.
The worthof feeding tripe really shows itself when the work load gets tough and the dog needs to call on its reserves of stamina. Also, if any of my dogs start to lose weight through work, I have no hesitation at all in putting them on tripe to regain condition.
Is tripe overrated? Not at all! Those dogs which are regularly fed tripe and do a lot of work in the field are invariably in the best of nick and look in top condition.
The only downside is that it’s a bit of a problem keeping tripe fresh in big quantities, especially in summer when flieds are buzzing around. The answer, of course, is to freeze it down in ‘bite size’ packs so that you avoid wastage.
For me, tripe gets a big thumbs up.
