Robin Neilson, who runs Catton Hall in Walton-on-Trent, in Derbyshire, said Mr Walton, who has lived locally all his life, was recovering well and it seemed that there would be no long-term effect.
Mr Neilson said: “It’s a serious wound but there is no permanent damage that the doctors can see at the moment.”
The person who accidentally shot Mr Walton volunteered to be questioned by police and has not been arrested in connection with the incident.
Shooting and countryside organisations are reminding Guns that safety is paramount when out on game shoots and clay grounds.
Shooters should remind themselves regularly about best practice and safety advice before going out shooting.
