Among the highlights was the prototype over-under gun by London-maker Boss & Co, dating from 1909, which sold for £19,200.

A hammer ejector gun by James Purdey & Sons, dating from 1895, that belonged to Lord Ripon (Earl de Grey) ? considered as the greatest shot of all time ? sold for £18,000.

Lord Ripon’s iconic walking cane, also in the auction, realised £2,040.

Auctioneer, Gavin Gardiner, said: “I was delighted with such a strong turnout in tonight’s auction. The saleroom was packed and there was record number of telephone bids. The market remains buoyant for fine English and Scottish guns, I was especially pleased to have sold the historic Boss & Co prototype over-under gun as well Lord Ripon’s walking cane and his hammer ejector Purdey. I look forward to my next sale at Sotheby’s, London on December 14.”
