Peter Wilson wins double-trap world shooting record

The 25-year-old shooter from Dorset won the double-trap final with 198 hits out of 200 targets, and must now be considered a favourite to win gold at this summer?s Games in London.

After qualifying with a score of 148, Wilson kept calm under pressure in the medal match, shooting a perfect round of 50 for a total score of 198 ? beating the previous record of 196 hits, which was set in 2009 by China?s 2008 Olympic medallist Hu Binyuan.

Though Britain?s Olympic shooting team will not be selected until 2 May, Wilson said that he now felt confident that he would make the team, following consistently impressive performances over the past 12 months.

He said: ?I knew it was going to be taut. [William] Chetcuti was just one target behind me, and he?s a great shooter. I tried to take it easy, to be relaxed, and I made it. I?m now looking forward to London.?

The competition is the last before the Olympic warm-up at London?s Royal Artillery Barracks later this month.
