The recruitment drive is being led by Central Scotland and Tayside Police forces, the Scottish Gamekeepers? Association (SGA) and the Scottish Rural Property and Business Association.

The pilot project hopes to recruit 12 rural specials in Tayside and central Scotland and it could be extended to other forces.

Special constables are part-time volunteers who have the same powers as regular police officers.

The SGA’s Alex Hogg said: “The launch created a lot of discussion among gamekeepers on the SGA stand and we are now looking forward to seeing some of that interest turn into actual applications.”
