An investigation showed that between April 2008 and March 2011 there were 698 reported thefts from farm premises, an increase of 134% over the previous three-year period, with high-value vehicles and shotguns among the items stolen.

DCI Peter Reeve, of Northumberland Area Command, said: ?These figures emphasise how much we need farmers, landowners and those that live in our communities to work with us to tackle rural crime. Protecting rural communities remains one of our priorities and we continue to make significant arrests and recoveries of stolen property.?
