Angling, ferreting and countryside enthusiasts have paid tribute to the author who, to many, epitomised the best in the worlds of angling and ferreting.

Course fishing fan, Chris Tarrant, told Shooting Times Fred taught him everything he knows: “It is a great loss. I first met him as a young boy on the Kennet when he explained to me about currents and where fish would lie waiting for food to come down to them. I fished with him in Canada – even into his eighties when his enthusiasm was still boundless and we threw a great party to celebrate his being awarded the MBE earlier this year. His contribution to fieldsports was massive and we have lost a dear friend.”

Fred was awarded the MBE in January for his services to angling after he, his brother Ken and cousin Joe, developed a new and unique method of fishing that helped anglers catch more and bigger fish.
