Opinion is divided over fresh calls for the voluntary ban on shooting blackgrouse to be lifted in a bid to stabilise the bird?s moorland population.

Patrick Laurie, author of The Black Grouse, a book published this week, told The Scotsman newspaper that shooting the threatened bird could result in more money being invested into cultivating private land.

BASC Scotland?s Colin Shedden said that shooters should be congratulated for introducing the moratorium, but that there were some areas where the opportunity could exist for ?careful and sustainable? shooting.
