A superb pair of side-by-side 12 bore sidelock ejector shotguns by J. Woodward & Sons sold for £16,800 at Gavin Gardiner ltd.’s sale of fine modern and vintage sporting guns on April 22.
The superb guns featured 29 inch chopper lump barrels and retained much of the original case hardened colour.
The engraving and decoration on the guns are particularly striking, with fine scroll engraving, gold numbered top levers, arcaded fences and highly-figured 15 inch stocks with Prince of Wales grips.
Complete with the maker’s brassbound oak and leather case, it is little wonder that the guns sold so well.
The sale, which took place in association with Sotheby’s at their New Bond Street sale rooms, was a great success and saw several other lots make significant sums.
A fine, unused pair of side-by-side 12 bore sidelock ejector guns by AYA that were completed in 1992 and a pair of self-opening side-by-side 12 bore sidelock ejector guns by J. Purdey & Sons dated 1896 both reached £12,600.
A pair of 12 bore side-by-side sidelock ejector guns by William Evans, meanwhile, complete with lightweight aluminium motor case, sold for an impressive £15,000.
Gavin Gardiner’s next sale of sporting guns will be held at the Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland on August 24 and entries are now being accepted.
