What constitutes dogging-in these days?

Keepers use many methods to keep their birds at home.

Tuesday, 16 January 2007

Before our old keeper retired, dogging-in was done on foot. The new young keeper insists on dogging-in on a quad bike with a dog in the bucket, charging across the fields and leaving muddy tracks all over the land.

A:

Dogging-in means using a dog to push straying pheasants from the boundaries of a shoot back into the middle.

The success of such a manoeuvre depends on the geography of the land; many keepers use other methods to keep their birds at home.

Dogging-in on a quad bike with a dog sitting in the bucket sounds a very dubious method and not one to be recommended.

Modern technology can be applied to many tasks, but I would suggest that dogging-in is not one of them.

It sounds to me as if your young keeper is simply having fun on his quad bike rather than doing any worthwhile work.

Get him back on his feet!
