Deer stalking: Is a .243 too small a calibre for anything other than roe deer and foxes?

I prefer larger calibres than .243 for all-round deer management but lots of people do use a .243 so it can't be all that bad.

In the right hands a .243 cartridge is a fine round but the high velocity can damage a lot of meat and it doesn't have a lot of spare knock down power in the event of a less than perfect shot placement.

On the plus side though, its low recoil makes it easier to shoot accurately.
