I’ve got an off-the-shelf air rifle (non FAC). Can I shoot pigeons with it and what sort of a range can I expect that it will kill them cleanly?

Modern air rifles can be very effective tools for pigeon shooting, even the non FAC( under 12ft/lbs) variety.
I’ve found the .177 to be the more accurate of the two, but for stopping power, you cannot beat the heavier .22, particularly if you only go for head shots.
Depending on your ability, expect to restrict your range to a maximum of 40 yards, a distance generally regarded as being the sporting limit for a shotgun.
The beauty of an air rifle is its quietness allowing it to be used in fairly confined areas where the noise of a shotgun would bring complaints from residents in the near vicinity.
