The Environment Agency and Natural England were granted new civil powers on 3 February, which will give them greater flexibility in enforcing environmental law. The new sanctions offer the regulators an alternative to criminal prosecutions. In the majority of cases, non-compliance with the law is unintentional and, therefore, sanctions are deemed more proportionate.
