It is something that nobody has fully explained, but the general consensus is that pigeons are supplementing minerals, maybe those that have been depleted during the breeding season.
I have only done it successfully once, killing a bag of 30 odd birds with the late Chis Catlin, near his home in Stamford, Lincolnshire.
