Do I have to apply for a licence variation?
I’ve just sold my .22-250 rifle and informed the police. Do I have to apply for a variation to buy another one of the same calibre?

I’m afraid so, tedious though it is. This is what is known as a ‘one-for-one’ variation and you will need to apply for it in the usual way.
As with the first grant you will need to show you have a good reason for getting a new rifle.
