Dramatic drop in Scotland’s rare waders

The Scottish Gamekeepers Association (SGA)has warned that grouse moors may soon be the last safe haven for Scotland’s wading birds. The most recent British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) Breeding Bird Survey has shown that the rarer wading species in Scotland have declined sharply, with lapwing numbers falling by 56 per cent in 17 years, and curlews suffering the same percentage drop in numbers. Golden plovers were also among the species listed, dropping by 18 per cent. The SGA has called on the Government to take action.
