Eat Wild, the development board for British game, is urging shoots to secure routes to market for the birds they shoot ahead of next season.
Eat Wild’s Plan for the Plate initiative sets out to encourage shoots to speak to their game dealers in good time. It suggests these early conversations will help game dealers sort out their logistics chains and make arrangements with suitable retail outlets.
Eat Wild is also calling for lead-free shoots to sign up to the lead-free register so dealers, processors and stockists can source game to service this growing market.
Nick Lister, owner of Ox Close Fine Foods said: “We must eat what we shoot, and everyone involved must take the relevant steps to ensure that happens. Game dealers need to know the days and bag sizes shoots are planning now so we can plan for those birds to go to market.”
Through Plan for the Plate, Eat Wild aims to develop and support the growth of the game meat market while underpinning the importance of responsible and forward-thinking practices in all game management and distribution.
