How do I keep my head on the stock?

It's a question of technique

How long should my gun stock be?

Q: I had a ¼in taken off my stock as it was snagging on my coat as I mounted, but since then I have not shot as well. Have I made it too short?

A: Your nose should be 2in to 3in away from your hand on the stock and your other arm should be at 90 degrees at the elbow. By shortening your stock by ¼in your head now sits ¼in further up the stock so your eye will be higher. Check at home in a mirror with an empty gun – your eye should be above the rib like a marble on a table. If you can see the skin below your eye your comb is too high. If it looks OK, then it’s just a matter of getting used to the new position.
