Three dogs may have come back with a live bird while hunting, but only the judges would be in a position to evaluate the exact circumstances surrounding each incident.

They would also have the opportunity to examine closely each bird that was retrieved to look for injury, sickness or some other reason why the bird was not able to fly or escape capture.

There are occasions when a bird cannot physically get out of its hiding place, and if there is any doubt surrounding its capture, then the judges will normally give the benefit of the doubt to the dog and allow it to continue in the trial.
