Handlers who use lots of whistle will make birds push forward away from the line, and the judges will penalise them for noisy handling.

It may also be considered that if you need too much whistle the dog is not under good control, which is another major fault.

Your spaniel should hunt the beat in front of you with drive and determination, should face cover well and be lively and biddable.

Ideally, field trial judges are looking for a spaniel showing good ground treatment with a minimum of help from its handler.
