Will attempting to retrieve a bird which flies get a mark?

If, through no fault of its own, the dog could not complete the retrieve because the bird escaped capture, the dog may receive credit.

At the recent Kennel Club novice stake at Nevill Holt, in Leicestershire, the first chance for dog number one was a partridge, which took shot, then circled around behind the line and dropped out on to rough plough, unsighted from the dogs in line.

The dog made a fine job of reaching the area with expert handling, but as it homed in on the blood scent, the bird took off.

Dog one was given credit by the judges for the retrieve and dog number two took the next retrieve.
