Gundog training: Will a Labrador always get an A+ mark for completing an eye-wipe?
GUNDOG TRAINING
Paul Rawlings
The performance of the gundog will be judged on how it tackles each situation.
Just because the dog has eye-wiped one or more dogs does not mean that it performed well enough to be awarded the highest possible mark.
As I witnessed at a recent novice stake, three dogs tried in turn for a dead partridge some distance away behind the Gun, but for various reasons not one of them actually got to the fall.
The fourth picked it, but the work was not exceptional so it could not be deemed an A+ retrieve but a straight A.
