Hampshire wildlife photographer Deb Heath has been crowned British Deer Society (BDS) Photographer of the Year 2025
Hampshire wildlife photographer Deb Heath won the British Deer Society Photographer of the Year 2025. She claimed seven winning entries in total.
Her striking action shot Coming Through, showing a roe kid in motion, earned her the overall title. The British Deer Society said the image “stood out for its clarity, energy and sense of connection, capturing a moment both powerful and fleeting.”
Ms Heath, a keen amateur wildlife photographer for many years, joined the British Deer Society in 2019. She was drawn by her favourite subjects — local roe deer. Since then, she has entered the BDS competition every year and steadily built a remarkable portfolio. Over time, she won a couple of second prizes, and her photos frequently earned high commendations and featured on the BDS calendar.
Speaking to Shooting Times, Ms Heath shared her delight at this year’s success: “Imagine my joy when I opened the envelope from them this year. Of my nine photos, two had won first prizes and another had won second prize across the three categories; the other six were all highly commended. In addition, the judges named me Deer Photographer of the Year.”
Reflecting on her dedication, she said: “All my hard work – early rises, late finishes, hours of sitting in hedgerows being stung by nettles and eaten by midges – paid off.” She added that she hopes her success will “inspire other women to pick up their cameras and get out into what is often perceived as a male-dominated world.”
Each year, the British Deer Society invites members to submit their finest deer photographs. The entries showcase the beauty, behaviour, and natural habitats of wild deer throughout the UK. Judges evaluate creativity, composition, theme, and emotional resonance. The competition supports the Society’s goal of promoting deer welfare and raising awareness.
For 2025, the Society received more than a hundred entries across three categories: A Home for Deer, Deer Portraits, and Deer in Action. From fleeting wildlife moments to close-up encounters, the winning photographs offer a stunning glimpse into the everyday lives of wild deer.
