Your friend clearly has his finger on the pulse. Unlike Botox, which enhances only one?s vanity, hip replacements have given many dogs a pain free quality of life that they otherwise would not have had.
In one instance I can think of, an outrageously aggressive German Shepherd became a pussy cat after his gammy hip was replaced, proving just how much pain he was in prior to the treatment.
Other dogs might have been destroyed but for the technique.
It is expensive, and you need to remember that many working dogs affected by hip dysplasia can have a decent life without surgery.
