Canada Geese – Spring cull on Windermere

Lake District officials have announced a cull of 200 Canada geese on Lake Windermere, after complaints that the birds? droppings were damaging the quality of the lake?s water.

The work will start in the spring and further culls of the non-native bird could later be carried out on Windermere and on other lakes in the area, including Coniston and Grasmere.

The Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) says it is particularly concerned that Windermere?s population of Canada geese, thought to number around 1,200, is forcing out indigenous duck, which no longer nest on any of the lake?s islands.
