Commission forests for sale

Environment secretary Caroline Spelman is reported to be putting 1.85million acres of woodland currently overseen by the Forestry Commission up for sale as part of plans to save billions of pounds to help to cut the deficit.

Many shoots lease land or shooting rights from the Commission. A spokesman for BASC said: ?We are monitoring the situation with the Forestry Commission with interest. We will fight to protect shooting interests through the programme of cost reductions. The Commission is particularly important to many shooting rights including deer management and gameshooting. A mass sell-off of Commission land would present both challenges and opportunities, but as long as there are trees, there will be deer populations, which need management.?
