A pair of eagle owls are reported locally to be nesting in the RSPB’s flagship reserve at Geltsdale, in Cumbria. Geltsdale is a breeding ground for hen harriers, but numbers have been down in recent years. A Natural England survey carried out in the spring of 2008 found that the estate had lower bird populations on average than 16 shooting moors in Cumbria. At that time the RSPB admitted that its Geltsdale reserve has not had any breeding hen harriers since 2006.
