Minister launches wildlife initative

The Scottish Government launched Wildlife Estates Scotland (WES) last week, a new initiative that aims to highlight the contribution made to conservation by private landowners. The group was developed by the Scottish Rural Property & Business Association and the Scottish Estates Business Group, with advice from Scottish Natural Heritage, the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Cairngorms National Park.

Scottish environment minister Roseanna Cunningham said: ?Scotland?s sporting estates make an important contribution to our economy and have a vital role to play in managing our countryside, so I?m pleased to see them getting involved in this Europe-wide initiative.?

The project will give estates and landowners the opportunity to sign up to voluntary commitments on conservation of habitat and wildlife, delivered through sustainable sporting management. In return, estates will gain an internationally recognised conservation accreditation.
