Wild Justice has lodged a complaint to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) claiming that Waitrose and Marks & Spencer are selling game meat containing elevated levels of lead.
There are no UK nor EU regulations about the maximum allowable levels of lead in human food from wild-shot game animals.
The pressure group says claims made by Waitrose and M&S about no longer stocking game meat shot with lead ammunition are false and they are therefore breaching CMA guidance requiring marketing claims to be “truthful and accurate”.
Leon Challis-Davis, culinary director at Eat Wild, told Shooting Times: “Technical teams in both supermarkets and the game supplier have stringent rules and regulations to adhere to.
“It is now more important than ever that the shooting community steps up and moves away from lead on to non-toxic shot. If we expedited this process as an industry, this press release wouldn’t even be news.
“It is, however, a good thing that it has been highlighted that you can go down to your local M&S and Waitrose and buy pheasant and partridge.”
