An apprentice gamekeeper working on the Bolton Castle Estate has been awarded the Frank Jenkins Memorial Trophy, which recognises students, young keepers and conservationists who are great ambassadors for the profession.

Will Crowther was presented the award for 2025 after showing outstanding practical and theoretical knowledge during his studies of Countryside Management Level 3 at Bishop Burton College. Will spends at least two days a week on the Bolton Castle Estate under the watchful eye of headkeeper Ian Sleightholm.

The National Gamekeepers’ Organisation (NGO), which has presented the award since 2011, remarked on Will’s passion and commitment, saying: “He understands the balance between game and conservation and is always keen to discuss the benefits of shooting with the general public.”

Will’s roles include all aspects of upland and lowland keepering, including heather burning, trapping, tree planting, building bird boxes and keeping diaries.

The NGO added: “It is clear that Will’s drive and enthusiasm for gamekeeping and upland conservation will bring him the career he wants and, just as importantly, will bring benefits to the countryside as well.”
