Despite a run of bitterly cold winters, Scotland's best 2013 trophies were head and shoulders above the rest of Europe
Recent winters, which have stirred up several superlatives in terms of describing the cold, have fuelled speculation over the impact they will have on our roe. The answer will not become apparent for several years, so it remains to be seen if excess mortality, predicted by some, over the winter of 2012/13 will affect future roe generations.
As far as this review goes, recent cold winters do not seem to have had a discernible effect on the antler growth or the numbers of trophies produced, which have remained constant and of a high quality.
The figures for 2013 show that 214 Scottish trophies qualified for CIC medals, of which 52 achieved gold, 89 silver and 73 bronze.
