The CA’s response to law review

Wildlife should be "managed", not protected

Proposals to unify all UK wildlife law into one statute could result in restrictions on shooting game, the Countryside Alliance (CA) has warned.

The Law Commission, whose public consultation on the subject is about to close, says the current legal framework is ?overly complicated? and has proposed the biggest shake-up of wildlife law since the introduction of the Game Act in 1828.

But the CA is worried that, in seeking to create a single, unified law, the licensing regime that exists for taking and killing protected species could apply to game species.

Its written response to the consultation states: The new single statute needs to be drafted to recognise that those huntable species that can currently be taken or killed without a specific licence being applied for should continue to remain in the same position.

The CA also says it is concerned that ?wildlife management? does not seem to be the objective of the Law Commission?s proposals, which must recognise that all species need management.
