It?s not so much where your nearest decoy is placed, rather, where you create your killing area.
I usually try to make this no more than 25 yards from my hide, at which range my chosen choke/cartridge combination of 1/4 and 30 gm sixes has the optimum chance of success.
Sometimes the nearest decoy is only a few paces from the hide, and at others it could be more than 30 yards away, depending on the wind, but the killing area will always be at a constant range.
