The loan to Mattersey Rifle & Pistol Club, based near Blyth, is the largest to be given out by the WHT and the first that the WHT has given to a club which is not directly connected to wildfowling.
The cash has been used to buy 43.5 acres of disused quarry, three-and-a-half acres of which will be developed into rifle ranges. Club members will work with the local Wildlife Trust to manage and restore the rest of the land, which will remain as mixed woodland and ponds.
Club chairman Brendan Price said: ?As well as improving habitats and our shooting range facilities, this loan will allow the club to promote its existing rifle range, host Young Shots events and develop deerstalking courses and other target shooting opportunities.?
