Dogs certainly have their place when ferreting. Dogs of any breed, shape and size can be used to find rabbits, which is an extremely important gift. However, dogs used to catch rabbits are normally split between running dogs or terriers. That said, I’ve seen dogs such as spaniels and collies catch rabbits as well as the rest of them. Running breeds such as lurcher hybrids and whippets tend to catch rabbits as they flee to the next burrow, while terriers catch their prey in cover once bolted by ferrets. Any breed can learn to ambush rabbits as they bolt and this can make an extremely efficient team.
