The home of Shooting Times and Sporting Gun

Review: The White Horse Inn

As far as picturesque views go, the landscape that greets you upon arrival at the White Horse Inn is a spectacular one. Nestled in the rolling hills of the South Downs, the location is one of unrivalled tranquility just 10 miles from the A3.

With plenty of game shooting in Chilgrove and surrounding areas, the White Horse Inn is perfectly positioned for shoot parties. The restaurant, with its original wood beams, leather seating and taxidermy, offers a fine menu built around the fresh produce sourced from nearby and featuring game when in season. The food is delicious and the bar cosy, with friendly staff that will even let you borrow the bar phone if you need to make an emergency call (mobile signal is lacking).

The real treat comes when you retire to one of the Stag rooms, which boasts a private patio and hot tub. There is no better way to relax than to float around in your own private jacuzzi and soak your aches away.

The White Horse Inn is near the unusual Apsley Sporting ground at the Cowdray Estate in Midhurst, where you can book a clay shooting lesson with Darron Carver in the most rural of settings. We spent an hour with Jo Langford, who proved very skilled and patient in coaxing the best out of a pair of beginners. Jo managed to turn someone who was scared of shooting into a person who was not only hitting more than their fair share of clays, but loving every minute of it too. Click here to see some photos.

We’re keen to book some more time in with Jo from Darron Carver, we can’t recommend her highly enough! And if we manage to get away from the city long enough for a lesson, we’d certainly return to the White Horse Inn in Chilgrove for a well earned supper or another night in the lap of luxury.
