Change to firearms certificate conditions for large calibres

New condition for firearms certificates approved by Association of Chief Police Officers.

A new condition for firearms certificates, which allows shooters with larger calibre rifles to shoot smaller pest species such as foxes, has been approved by the Association of Chief Police Officers Firearms and Explosives Licensing Working Group.

The following condition can now be applied where firearms licensing managers think it is practical to do so:

“The (rifle / sound moderator / firearms / ammunition) shall be used for shooting (Named Principal Quarry Species) and any other lawful quarry, and for zeroing on ranges, on land deemed suitable by the chief officer of police for the area where the land is situated* and over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot.”

Anyone who requires their certificate condition to be amended should submit their certificates to their police force’s firearms licensing department.

If ACPO has agreed this then ALL areas should adopt it. It strikes me as a little crazy that the association meets to agree principles then whole rafts of the country ignore the decisions ? There are other areas that need sorting out such as foxes - are they vermin or do they need to detailed separately... do you need to have them on a an HMR or not.....Why do some forces feel it is suitable for close range foxing and other don't. I would like the Chief Police Officers apply what they agree and sort out grey areas.

Finally some common sense from ACPO! I'm currently being encouraged to buy two separate rifles when one would do both jobs. Once you've scoped and bought dies for two calibres the extra costs are significant before you've even bought the rifle.
